Mississippi State Announces Departure of Head Coach Zach Arnett

Bulldogs Part Ways with Coach After One Season

Starkville, Mississippi - November 13, 2023

After less than a full season at the helm, Mississippi State University has announced the departure of head football coach Zach Arnett. The decision comes after the Bulldogs stumbled to a 4-6 record in Arnett's first year, including a dismal 1-6 mark in SEC play.

Arnett, who took over the program amidst an emotional time following the tragic passing of legendary coach Mike Leach, was in the first season of a four-year contract that paid $3 million annually. Despite a 2-0 start, the Bulldogs stumbled through the remainder of the season, failing to meet expectations.

With Arnett's departure, Mississippi State has appointed senior offensive analyst Greg Knox as the team's interim head coach. The university has also announced a national search for a permanent replacement.

"We would like to thank Zach for his dedication and hard work during his time at Mississippi State," said MSU athletic director John Cohen. "We wish him all the best in his future endeavors."

Arnett, who previously served as the Bulldogs' defensive coordinator, expressed gratitude for his opportunity to lead the program. "I want to thank the players, coaches, staff, and fans for their support during my time at Mississippi State," he said. "I wish the program nothing but the best moving forward."

The Bulldogs have two games remaining on the schedule, against Southern Mississippi and in-state rival Ole Miss. Following the conclusion of the season, Mississippi State will begin its search for a new head coach to lead the program to future success.
