NASA Chooses Boeing to Lead Full-Scale Demonstrator Development of Transonic Truss-Braced Wing

Groundbreaking Aircraft Design Aims for Enhanced Efficiency

Pioneering Concept to Revolutionize Airliner Designs

AGOURA HILLS, Calif., Jan. 18, 2023 - In a groundbreaking advancement for the aviation industry, NASA has selected Boeing [NYSE: BA] and its industry team to develop and flight test a full-scale demonstrator of a Transonic Truss-Braced Wing (TTBW). This innovative aircraft design, with its distinctive braced high aspect ratio wings, holds the potential for a significant leap in efficiency, reducing operating costs and environmental impact.

The TTBW concept was originally conceived in 2010 and is now poised for a full-scale demonstrator, with Boeing predicting the possibility of commercial airliners adopting the design in the future. The demonstrator will utilize a long, thin strut to support the extended wingspan, enhancing aerodynamic performance and reducing drag. This design is particularly well-suited for single-aisle airliners, common for short- to medium-range flights.

With a substantial US$425 million cash injection from NASA, Boeing will embark on the construction and testing of the full-sized TTBW. This investment underscores NASA's commitment to fostering cutting-edge aviation technologies that promote sustainability and fuel efficiency in the air transport sector.
