Roy Asberry Cooper III was born in Nashville, North Carolina, in Nash County. His mother was a public school teacher, which instilled in him a deep appreciation for education. Cooper went on to earn a law degree from UNC and returned home to Nash County to practice law.

Cooper is married to Kristin Cooper née Bernhardt, who worked as a guardian ad litem for children. Together, they raised three daughters in Rocky Mount. Cooper is a devoted family man who cherishes the time he spends with his wife and children.

He has held various positions, including District Attorney for Nash and Edgecombe Counties, Speaker of the North Carolina House of Representatives, and North Carolina Attorney General.
