Ilhan Omar Faces Challenge from Within Her Own Party
Omar Backs Resolution Recognizing Israel as Ally
Republicans Vote to Oust Her from Foreign Affairs Committee
Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) is facing a challenge from within her own party on Tuesday after two fellow members of the House Foreign Affairs Committee introduced a resolution to remove her from her position.
The resolution, introduced by Representatives Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) and Elaine Luria (D-VA), cites Omar's recent comments about Israel and the United States as evidence of her unsuitability to serve on the committee.
In a tweet last week, Omar compared the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban, two groups designated as terrorist organizations by the U.S. government. The tweet sparked widespread condemnation from both Democrats and Republicans.
Omar has since apologized for her comments, but the resolution to remove her from the Foreign Affairs Committee is moving forward. The resolution is expected to be voted on by the full House on Tuesday. If it passes, Omar will be the first member of the House to be removed from a committee since Alcee Hastings was removed from the Intelligence Committee in 1983.
