Barnsley v Stevenage: Clarke praises players despite defeat

Darrell Clarke says he can't ask for much more from his players after Barnsley fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to League One leaders Stevenage.

Clarke's side put in a spirited performance but ultimately could not find a way past a resolute Stevenage defence. Luke Norris's second-half penalty proved to be the difference between the two sides.

Despite the defeat, Clarke was quick to praise his players for their effort.

"I can't ask for much more from the players," Clarke said. "They gave everything they had and played with a lot of heart and desire. We just came up against a very good Stevenage team who are top of the league for a reason."

Clarke also believes that Barnsley can take positives from the performance.

"We showed a lot of good things today," Clarke said. "We created some good chances and we defended well for the most part. We just need to be more clinical in front of goal and we will start to pick up more wins."

Barnsley will now look to bounce back from the defeat when they travel to Exeter City on Tuesday.

Reaction from Luke Norris

Luke Norris scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot and was pleased to help Stevenage maintain their lead at the top of the table.

"It was a tough game," Norris said. "Barnsley are a good side and they made it difficult for us. But we showed great character and determination to get the win."

Norris is now Stevenage's top scorer this season with 12 goals and he is delighted with his form.

"I'm just happy to be able to contribute to the team," Norris said. "I'm getting into good positions and the lads are creating chances for me. I just need to keep scoring goals and helping the team win games."

Stevenage extend lead at the top

Stevenage's win over Barnsley sees them extend their lead at the top of League One to four points.

MK Dons are now Stevenage's closest challengers after they beat Port Vale 3-0 on Saturday.

Stevenage will now look to continue their good form when they travel to Cambridge United on Tuesday.
